Livingroom Before

As you can see in the before-photos, my clients never really attempted to furnish this room.  They just used furniture they already had because they felt overwhelmed by all the empty space and bare walls.

When they asked me to help them, I asked lots of questions about how they intended to use the room, what they wanted to keep, their likes and dislikes, etc.  We knew we’d be keeping the rug, and that the color scheme would be derived from it.  Because of the dramatic architecture, we also knew the furnishings should have some drama.

The first place I look for furnishings is in my clients’ homes.  Lots of times I find that my clients have the perfect piece for a room and don’t know it; the piece may be languishing in some other room where it doesn’t work as well.  That’s how I found the curio cabinets and the coffee table you see in the after-photos.  We also kept their piano and lamps.  The sofa, chairs, end tables, and artwork are new.

Lastly, we accessorized the curio cabinets and the room generally, using both accessories they already owned, and some new ones.  The accessories include crystal and brass for sparkle, seashells, coral, and wood for a natural look, and ceramics for color.

Instead of being overwhelmed by empty space and bare walls, my clients now enjoy a beautifully furnished living room with art on the walls.
